The current economic crisis is the most serious challenge Iceland has ever faced. Iceland‘s problems are partly due to the ongoing global economic upheaval. Further reason for the depth of this crisis in Iceland, is that the banks which were privatised - in accordance with IMF policy - early this century, were much too risk-seeking. It is reprehensible that the Icelandic government did not intervene to halt this development. Following the collapse of the banking system, the Icelandic government sought IMF assistance in October 2008.

We, the signees of this letter, seriously doubt that the cooperation between Iceland and the IMF is for the benefit of the Icelandic nation. It is becoming clear to us that the agenda of the IMF is primarily to indebt the Icelandic nation in order to protect the interests of investors. We, the Icelandic People, take on an enormous  responsibility, and it is our obligation to ensure that future generations will not be mired in debt beyond their capacity to pay. As Icelandic citizens we are entitled to clear answers to our burning questions.

Resent surveys have shown that a clear majority of the Icelandic People is against further cooperation with the IMF. A key factor here is that the IMF put the Icelandic goverment up against the wall to protect the interests of UK and Holland in the Icesave dispute. It is unacceptable that an international organization should conduct its business in such a manner, and this has seriously undermined the credibility of IMF in Iceland.

As the fundamental interests of a whole nation and our future generations are at stake, we request a meeting with you, the Managing Director of the IMF. We would like to discuss with you the economic program for Iceland and ask you to explain certain components of it. We will present careful criticism based on official data. The meeting can take place in Reykjavík, Washington or any other location of your choice. It is essential that this meeting take place as soon as possible and no later than December 15^th 2009.

We, the signees of this letter, are citizens of Iceland. We are of all ages, both genders, and have different political views. After the banks collapsed last fall we organised civil meetings where government ministers and members of Parliament appeared and answered questions from the public – face to face. We believe that you, as the Managing Director of the IMF, should consider it an honour to follow in the footsteps of members of the oldest parliament in the world, Alþingi,and meet us in an open and honest discussion.

Dear Mr.Sigurðsson

Thank you for writing to me about your concerns on behalf of the group that you represent. I couldn’t agree more that the current economic crisis is the most serious challenge that Iceland has had to face in recent memory. I also agree that we all—including us here at the IMF—need to do a better job of explaining what is being done to address it. So let me offer a few reflections on the points you raise.

First, on the Icesave dispute. Resolution of this dispute has never been a condition of the IMF-supported program. The IMF is not supposed to involve itself in bilateral disputes between its member countries and did not do so in this instance. However, the Icesave dispute did indirectly affect the timing of the program’s first review since it held up needed financing from Nordic countries (for whom resolution of this dispute was a condition). I am sure you will agree that the government’s program must be internally consistent—it makes no sense to agree on a macroeconomic framework if the money is not available to finance those policies.

Second, on the more general point about Iceland’s indebtedness. The IMF and the Icelandic authorities recognized from the beginning that Iceland’s post-crisis level of indebtedness would represent a huge challenge to the country. That is why we agreed, as a key principle, that the government should not absorb creditor losses. As I am sure you are aware, investors and creditors have in fact sustained very large losses due to this crisis. Despite repeated appeals for bail outs, the government has not stepped in to shield them.

Third, regarding the origins of Iceland’s crisis. I agree that they lie in the financial sector. Banks took outsized risks, and supervision and regulation failed to rise to the challenge. Privatization did set the stage for this, but this was not a matter of following IMF policy: we did not then and do not now have any policy which requires countries to privatize banks. I want to assure you that the IMF-supported program recognizes that this tragedy cannot be allowed to repeat itself. This is the key reason why there is a focus on reforms to strengthen banking regulation and supervision.

Looking back over the last year, I am certain that the cooperation between the IMF and Iceland has been to Iceland’s benefit. The financing provided by the IMF, together with loans provided by countries within the context of the IMF-supported program, is exceptional relative to the size of Iceland’s economy. This massive assistance has helped stabilize Iceland’s exchange rate, protecting citizens who were exposed to foreign exchange and inflation-indexed debt from enormous increases in their debt service burden. It has also made it possible for the government of Iceland to run a large fiscal deficit that has cushioned the impact of the crisis on the economy. And while I realize it may not seem that way for many of Iceland’s citizens, Iceland’s economic contraction has in fact been milder than what many other countries that have been hit hard by the crisis have gone through to date.

Looking ahead, the IMF will continue to support Iceland’s efforts to extricate itself from this crisis for as long as your government requires it. Without wanting to minimize the hardship your country is going through right now, we are confident that the policies and financing now in place are in Iceland’s best interest and will continue to ease the burden of adjustment.

I regret that I will not be able to meet with your group in person, but I hope that this letter has helped clarify the IMF’s stance on some of the challenges facing Iceland. The IMF’s resident representative in Iceland, Mr. Rozwadowski, whom some of you have already met, would be happy to meet with you to further clarify the Fund’s role in Iceland.

Núna eru Norðmenn komnir í fýlu út í AGS og Strauss-Khan sérstaklega, telja hann fara með rangt mál og það sé ekki Norðurlöndunum að kenna að endurskoðun AGS hafi dregist á langinn, sjá frétt ABC Nyheter í Noregi.

Kærar þakkir fyrir þessa upplýsingamiðlun og þessa tímabæru þrýstings-starfsemi, Helga! Ég er að skoða umræðuna á ABC-Nyheter og lesa í gegnum athugasemdirnar við fréttina, og þær eru yfirgnæfandi stuðningur við okkur Íslendinga, ásamt harðri gagnrýni á norsk stjórnvöld. I statsbudsjettet for 2010 er det foreslått å bruke over 27 MILLIARDER Kr. i bistand/uhjelp. Nå blir det vel slik at en brøkdel når frem til de som virkelig trenger det og mye havner vel i lomma på korrupte ledere i diverse land. Koranskoler i Pakistan og diverse diktaturstater og terrororganisasjoner skal vel også ha sitt i tråd med den rød/grønne politikken. Hadde Island vært ei lita øy utenfor Afrika og med et styresett i diktatorstil så hadde nok økonomisk bistand allerede vært gitt. AP og SV hever ved passende anledninger ord som solidaritet. Nåværende ledere i AP og SV er bløffmakere, det eneste dere ser ut for å prioritere er egen makt og egen vinning.

Norsk stjórnvöld þræta ekki fyrir þetta en bréfið ykkar hefur hrundið af stað gagnrýni almennings. Það er greinilegt að íslensk stjórnvöld eru aum.

Skæruliðahernaður gagnvart IMF er bara af hinu góða, ekki hafa þeir reynst okkur vel og því fullt tilefni til andspyrnu. Það var afar jákvætt framtak hjá ykkur að senda þetta bréf. Gaman að sjá undirtektirnar hjá frændum vorum Norðmönnum og greinilegt að þar eru margir færir um að hugsa sjálfstætt.

Hafið þið þökk fyrir ykkar frábæra framtak Helga, og megi þetta verða upphaf af varnarbaráttu þjóðarinnar að hnekkja þeirri útbreiddu skoðun að Íslendingar standi ekki við skuldbindingar sínar. 

Þjóðin vill réttlátan dóm þar sem öll vafaatriði málsins séu reifuð.  Og sá dómur dæmi eftir skýrum lagatexta, ekki vilja embættismanna ESB hvað þeir hefðu viljað að stæði í reglum sínum þegar áfallið dundi yfir.

Og svona bréf hrekja rangfærslurnar úr skúmaskotum sínum.  

Svo er það okkar að vega þær.

Að vera í klóm IMF, er að mínu viti líkt og að vera hersetin þjóð. Við tilheyrum nú leiguþýi alþjóðlegrar auðmannklíku, sem hefur aðeins áhuga á einu; keppast sín á milli hver þeirra geti líkt hvað best eftir Tilbera úr þjóðsögunum okkar. Þeir eru blóðugir upp að öxlum þessir menn, og fara um eins og engisprettufaraldur.

Kærar þakkir fyrir framtakið Helga og allur hópurinn.  Sé að Gunnar Skúli læknir er í hópnum líka.  Hann hefur verið að skrifa comment og pistla gegn AGS.   Og veit um annað fólk líka sem hafði skrifað AGS skammarbréf, Jakobína I. Ólafsdóttir og ég sjálf að vísu í júlí sl. og aftur í september.  

Þeir eru stórhættulegir og hafa farið um heiminn, mest til Afríku, Asíu og Suður-Ameríku og arðrænt lönd og kúgað.   Nú eru þeir með Lettland og Ísland í skítugum krumlunum.   Við getum kennt óhæfum stjórnvöldum okkar um.   Það verður að takast á við þetta eyðileggjandi skrímsli af fullu afli, enda hefur þeim tekist verr að kúga lönd þarf sem almenningur landanna stendur fast í fæturna gegn þeim.
